Smart Paste will create new documents if the source document does not already exist in the destination folder. If the document already exists in the destination folder, the operation that is performed depends on the version of the source document as described in the following table. The document properties that are compared to determine the versions are described in Understanding the Smart Paste properties.
Source Version | Operation |
---|---|
No source document number or version number |
New document |
No source version number |
New document |
Source and destination versions are incompatible (for example, B and 1) |
New version |
Source version is the same as the destination version |
Document is updated |
Source version is lower than the destination version |
An error message in red text is shown and the document is deselected. |
Source version is higher than the destination version |
New version |
For more information about the error messages that can be shown and exceptions, see Resolving common problems with Smart Paste.
Differences between the files attached to the source and destination documents are resolved as described in the following table.

When a new version is created, if the prior version of the document is linked to other folders, the new version of the document will also be linked to the same folders (if allowed by the access control profiles). A system administrator can configure whether prior versions can also be found from other folders.
